Tuesday Special: Book Recommendations from Class 5

Martin Waller is a Class 5 (Grade 5) teacher at Holy Trinity Rosehill School in the North East of England. In March, he and I decided to launch a joint book project. I asked his students to tell me about the books they enjoy reading. When they post about their favorite books, they earn a special Book Project Badge.

Today I am passing along their recommendations. Whenever I could, I added a link.

My favourite book is a book called The Witch of Turlingham Academy by Ellie Boswell. I like it because it is about witches and witch hunters and I really like things like that. It is about a girl called Katy, who is a witch hunter, and a girl called Sophie, who is a witch. But Katy and Sophie begin to be friends will they be friends forever or will it come between them?

The book I like is Alice in Wonderland it is about a girl who is sat by a tree and is really bored. Every couple of seconds she turns to look at the other girls’ book but there are hardly any pictures! It was written by Lewis Carroll and the first edition published in 1865. I like this book because it is funny and adventurous, these are the things I like in a story.

My name is Libby and my hobbies are reading, art and playing games.

I can not choose my favourite book, because I enjoy so many, but I would probably choose the fairy books by (a welsh author) Gwyneth Rees. I think these books are good fun to read because you feel like you are one of the characters.

My name is Anna and my hobbies are reading, sports, Brownies, maths and art.

My favourite book is probably Lily Alone. It is about a girl called Lily who has three younger siblings called Pixie, Bliss and Baxter. Their Mum goes on holiday and phones their dad to come and stay with the kids. Later on, when Lily’s mum has already left, they get a phone call from their dad who says that he can’t come because he is in Manchester so they are all alone for a full week!

My name is Megan and my hobbies are reading, cycling, bird-watching and papercraft.

Nicholas on April 30, 2013

My favourite book is… The Hobbit. I really like it because Bilbo Baggins goes on an adventure with a wizard and a few elves; or dwarfs, I can’t remember. Anyway, Bilbo sleeps for the night in a cave and haves the worst dream ever. The dream, that he dreamt, was about the wall of the cave opens and goblins come through. Next morning Bilbo heard a little creak and the goblins come through and take the elves or dwarfs and Mr Bilbo Baggins but not the wizard…

My name is Nicholas and my hobbies are tennis, reading, learning, model making, crafts, games, cycling/scooting and playing with my friends.

My favourite book is Zom-b by Darren Shan .It is a gory horror and a bit scary. In the book B (the main character) is a bit of a bully. He bullies a younger child than him called Tyler. In the middle of the book the school that B goes to is invaded by zombies. B hears screams as the zombies feed on the schools slowest runners and the cornered people. Bs dad meets B at the school gates with some other men with rifles who start shooting the Zombies as they start to run.in the end B dies because Tyler becomes a zombie and kills B. All of Darren Shan’s books have a unsuspected ending!

Olivia on May 21, 2013

My favourite book is The Diamond Girls. The book is about a mother who was pregnant with 4 children and counting from 4 different men. The names of the children are Dixie, Rochelle, Jude and Martine. But when they move Dixie wants the house to look nice but with Rochelle’s flirting, Jude’s fighting and Martine storming off. How can she do it?

I really like another book to it is called Kaspar Prince of Cats. It was about a cat called Kaspar that the survived the Titanic. But he unfortunately died at the end of the book it made me cry. I would strongly recommend it to people of all ages. [This book is also called Kasper the Titanic Cat]
